To Protest is To Progress

My thoughts on the candidacy of Anura Kumara Dissanayake

For those looking to break free from the seemingly inescapable tribal mess of the two main camps, the JVP boss Anura Kumara Dissanayake is the perfect protest vote, and nothing more.

Erstwhile critics of the JVP may overlook their past flaws, and it will be wise to do so, even if all that achieves is a mildly irritating slap in the face of certain powerful political dynasties. We’ve brown-nosed them for this long. It’s time to put them in their place.

The illusive promise of “real change” is one we should retire altogether. What is real change, after all? A complete overhaul of the status quo? A marked improvement of the economy? A refinement of social norms? No one person can bring these about, even if they’re President.

The “change” we seek takes time and collective effort, not a savior waving about a wand, casting spells stringed together from pre-election promises ad libitum. Yes, we will need a leader to set an example, and AKD fits the bill, methinks, but he won’t win.

It’s going to be an interesting election for sure, and as you prepare to cast your vote, do remember this, no one can save us but ourselves.

I shared the above on Twitter in response to a certain “hot take” by Himal Kotelawala. The original thread can be found here.
