Inconsistent habits

A (very) short history of trying things on for size and giving them up

by Thamara Kandabada

More times than I’d care to count, I’ve tried to start a journaling habit. I’ve tried different methods to make it stick. It never did.

I’ve bought various notebooks over the years and tried taking notes at work and in general in life. I would always give up after overdoing it for a few days.

At one point in my life I started organising my days meticulously in my calendar. I had alloted time slots for sleep, meals, social media, hobbies—it was bordering on ridiculous. That lasted a few short months.

In the height of the pandemic, I played Wordle every day, until I discovered a hack and it became boring. I could have ignored the hack and kept on playing, but I didn’t.

When I first bought a PS4, I developed a habit of obsessively playing games to completion. I accrued a few Platinum trophies thanks to this. It became a chore after a while and I simply stopped.

A few years ago I started playing the Mini Crossword on the New York Times every day. It evolved into a habit of playing a number of their word games, including Connections, Spelling Bee, and Strands. It fizzled out after a while.

When LinkedIn first introduced word games, I played them every day. I had a close-to-400-day streak, until one day I missed it, and never picked it up again.

I have tried on various things over the years; not many of them have stuck. Various exercise routines, meal plans, writing challanges, meditation—I’ve tried it all. There are some things I’ve managed to continue doing, for example, my running, and this August blogging streak. I also listen to podcasts every day, a habit I’ve maintained for more than 10 years.

Seemingly disparate interests. Unrelated habits.

What does this say about me?
