I’ve been thinking of ditching WordPress for a static site generator (SSG) for some time now. WordPress has been great for the last 12 years, and I have no gripes with it as such (except the block editor, which just refuses to co-operate sometimes), but rebuilding a (version of this) site from the ground up is going to be an exciting project, and a perfect way to keep my novelty-craving brain occupied.
I’ve decided Astro is the best tool for me to use at this stage, with deployment in Vercel. Both have extensive and beginner-friendly documentation.
I am in no great hurry to get this finished; it’s simply going to be a side project which I can dip in and out of whenever I have time. This site will continue to be updated as normal.
Here are some of the changes/additions I’m thinking of making:
- Typography: Use of Maiola throughout, inspired by the This American Life website.
- Colour palette: Minor tweaks to my current colour palette.
- Archives: Current archives such as /gigs, /desk, and /podroll to be re-written as a file-based (
.md) content collections. - Codex: Adding a new
/codex(or/canon) page, version-controlled in Git. (Inspired by Buster Benson).
I’ve just got started. The code is open-source. Follow along here, and see blog updates here.
