Writing every day

I didn't think I could write a post a day, until I did it

by Thamara Kandabada

When I first heard about Blaugust, an annual blogging challenge where participants post 31 times during the month of August, I thought, “I’m never going to be able to do that”. I was intrigued, however. Not enough to sign up officially as a participant, but I wanted to use this as an excuse to try and write as much as possible this month. I remember telling a friend, “I will be an unofficial participant… meaning, I will make a concerted effort to post at least 10 posts this month”.

Looking back at my blog post archive, it is clear that on occasion entire years have passed without me writing anything. So, 10 posts a month was a high bar for me. My biggest concern was coming up with topics to write about. How could I possibly have enough to fill 10 posts within a month?

20 days in, I look back at those concerns with mild amusement. So far, writing inspiration has not been an issue. If it ever became an issue, I have discovered there is a great community of people around me who can help.

It helps that I don’t write anything of substance. They’re mostly personal updates, meta posts about this website itself, and sometimes, short rants. I couldn’t imagine writing long and well-researched think pieces every day. At least, not with the current responsibilities I have. What matters is that I’m exercising this muscle; the quality of the output is secondary to me at this stage.

I’m off to Manchester tomorrow. Of course, I’ll take the laptop with me. I will write at the airport. I have a lot of standing around to do as well, at a gig. I will write there. I will write at the hotel. I will take notes at the Manchester Museum and the Whitworth Art Gallery I’m visiting.

I will keep the streak active.
